Identify the 5 turning points.

TP1: Chief Brody discovers the remaining body parts of a girl who suffered from a shark attack.

TP2: Brody tries to prove that there really is a shark swimming in the ocean.

TP3: Brody chooses to stay in Amity and get rid of the shark, rather than leave town.

TP4: The shark drowns half the boat and eats Quint, leaving Brody stranded.

TP5: Brody defeats the shark by shooting him in the mouth, setting off the air tank and blowing him up.

What are the conventions of this genre?

- blood
- suspenseful music
- unexpected frightening images
- bad guy/ villain
- good guy/ hero

How does this movie live up to its conventions?

Jaws most definitely lived up to an average thriller’s conventions. You saw blood every time somebody would get attacked by a shark. It had suspenseful music whenever a shark would be approaching, which lead to a dramatic unexpected frightening scene. The shark was known as the “bad guy” because he was swimming around killing random victims and the good guy was known as Chief Brody because he was determined to save the people of Amity and in the end ended up killing the shark to keep the people of the town safe.

Movie Review

I personally enjoyed this movie because it brought suspense and showed us very realistic issues that can occur, but I would have liked to see more blood and guts. I think this movie had an interesting storyline. It’s actually scary in the sense that something like life could actually happen in real life. The movie had an effect on many people because they were scared to go into the ocean after having watched this movie, which shows that it did an excellent job in scaring the audience.
As for the directing, the shark wasn’t built as planned because it ended up looking too mechanical therefor it wasn’t shown too much during the movie. However, it ended up being a good thing because not seeing the whole shark allowed the audience more room for their imagination. One part that sort of ruined the movie was when the shark was breaking the boat by smashing against it, and afterward drowned half of the boat and ate the front of it. This part isn’t very believable because we all know that a real shark wouldn’t be capable to actually break through a boat of that size. I thought it was really horrifying to see the big cloud of blood that would surround the water whenever someone got attacked by the shark. It showed how much damage one shark could cause to the human body. This was probably one thing that scared the audience the most, along with seeing the remains of shark victims’ bodies.
The acting was one thing that didn’t amaze me too much in this movie. It wasn’t too horrible, but I sometimes cringed while Chief Brody would talk because some of his lines sounded too rehearsed. The three men that set out for sea to kill the shark, including Brody were a little bit boring. I didn’t see enough fear in their voices and expressions.
In conclusion, I would recommend this movie because it is a must-see, considering it was one of the most popular movies of its time. I would recommend it to an audience who enjoys suspense, without much blood and guts. It is probably preferable to be viewed within an audience of 13+ because there are some frightening scenes.

1. Identify the 5 turning points.

- TP 1: Johnny Utah goes undercover as a surfer to solve the case of the Ex-Presidents.
- TP 2: Johnny becomes close friends with a surfer named Bodhi.
- TP 3: Bodhi discovers that Johnny is an undercover FBI agent.
- TP 4: Johnny is forced to help the Ex-Presidents rob a bank in order to save Tyler’s life.
- TP 5: Bodhi escapes while Johnny is reunited with Tyler.

2. What are the conventions of this genre?

- guns
- explosions
- car chase
- fight scene
- villain/bad guy
- hero/ good guy
- blood
- stunts

3. How does this movie live up to its conventions?

I believe this movie lived up to its conventions very well. The villains were a group of bank robbers masked Ex-Presidents. Johnny Utah was the hero who ended up solving the case and saving the day in the end. Johnny was an FBI agent, therefore he aswell as the bank robbers carried guns on them. Of course the guns eventually lead to people getting shot and dying, which led to blood. There are several fight scenes in this movie, for example when the FBI agents rade the house of a group of drug-dealing surfers, or at the ending when Johnny and Bodhi get into a physical fight. There’s a car chase between Johnny and Angelo vs. the Ex-Presidents when they’re caught robbing a bank, which leads to an explosion when one of the surfers leaks gasoline all over their car to light it on fire. There a several stunts aswell for example surfing, jumping off a plane, etc.

4. Movie review

Action movies aren’t generally my type of movie, but I actually enjoyed this movie. I think I was mostly drawn to this movie because the lead actor, Keanu Reeves is quite good looking. The acting wasn’t the best in this movie. The lines were so cliché for its genre. The actors didn’t do such a good job at convincing their emotions; they looked like they were acting. However, I was amazed to find out that Keanu Reeves performed his own stunts. I give him props for actually going out and learning how to surf, jump off a place, etc. This made him become more in tune with his character.
Considering this movie was made quite a while ago, the graphics were pretty intense. They didn’t have all the technology available nowdays, but they still managed to have some pretty cool scenes that left you wondering how they managed to do that! One scene that really surprised me was the ending when Bodhi is riding that huge 50 year wave, and the wave completely massacres him. I have no idea how they managed to actually perform that without dying.
I didn’t see a problem with the directing of the movie. The ocean, the beach, etc. was just right for the theme of the movie. The camera was always focused on the most intense part of a scene. For example when Tyler and Johnny would kiss, we’d see a close-up of their faces, during fight scenes we’d get a clearer visual of those who were fighting.
I would recommend this movie to adults and teenagers who enjoy movies of this genre. The blood and guns would not make this movie suitable for younger audiences.

1. Identify the 5 turning points.

- Reuben catches his wife sleeping with the scuba instructor.
- Reuben meets Polly at a party.
- Reuben comes clean to Polly and spends the night with her.
- Polly is leaving the state.
- Reuben gets Polly to stay and they get back together.

2. What are the conventions of this genre?

- Something happens leaving one person hopeless
- People in unusual/funny situations
- A funny/stupid best friend
- Romance between 2 people
- Something happens that breaks up the couple
- A grand gesture at the end
- A happy ending

3. How does this movie live up to its conventions?

Reuben catches his wife cheating on him during their honeymoon, which leaves him sad and hopeless. His best friend who is quite comical in a stupid way invites him to a party where he meets Polly. Reuben and Polly break up because she sees something she doesn’t like. Reuben goes to Polly’s house before she leaves the state to ask for her forgiveness. Polly and Reuben get back together in the end to live a happy life.

4. Movie review

Along Came Polly is a romantic comedy which I found had just enough romance, as well as comedy. This movie lived up to the conventions you’d expect to see in a romantic comedy, making the movie quite predictable. The romance aspect of the film always kept you hoping and wondering, although the jokes and funny scenes gave the movie a much funnier feel. The acting was my favorite part of the movie. All the actors really transformed into their character. Ben Stiller gave a phenomenal performance as Reuben Feffer. His comic lines and scenes became even funnier related to his serious facial expressions. As for the directing of the movie, I didn’t see any problems. The scenarios were right for the scenes and the wardrobe fit the characters perfectly. Jennifer Aniston’s appearance was untidy and disorderly, just like her character’s personality. Finally I would like to recommend this movie to both male and female viewers who enjoy ths genre, preferably aged 13+ due to some sexual content. The romantic feel of this movie attracts females more than anything, but its comic side makes it suitable for both sexes.

Release Date:
We have chosen Friday October 15, 2010 as our release date due to the fact that no major blockbuster movie is coming out and we feel as though there will not be any competition. Also, it is near halloween therefore viewers are in the mood to watch horror and suspense films to get in the halloween spirit. My partner and I guarantee it will be a success.

Target Audience (+13)
We have chosen to allow viewers of the ages 13 and older to watch our movie. This age group is fitting for the film’s thriller/suspense genre, as the intended audience encompasses a wide age range, all the while ensuring that children under the age of twelve are not exposed to more mature themes. Adults will be naturally drawn to the movie’s theme, while young teenagers just gaining independence will flock to the theatre in hoardes, eager to be in the presence of an older crowd, no longer restricted to the friendly and colourful world of Disney. The reason that we’ve decided on the age of thirteen, rather than sixteen, is because we, too, remember the yearning to be allowed access to a film which we felt mature enough to handle, but were strictly barred from seeing until that seemingly unattainable age of sixteen. Having been denied for so long this access to thriller-like, content-loaded genre, thirteen-to-fifteen-year-olds will storm the gates while we readily profit from this newfound freedom. Not only will we benefit from the regular adult crowd, these young adults will be more than happy to spend their pocket money on these movies; we, of course, will be glad to oblige.

Stage 1 – the setup: Giancarlo is a 17 year old high school student who doesn’t have many friends because of his awkward personality. He lives by himself because his father left when he was a child and his mother recently passed away. He isolates himself from the other kids because he prefers to be left alone. The only person he considers a good friend is his classmate Alessia because she shares his common interests. Alessia is the only person who’s not afraid to be around Giancarlo; however she is much more social than he is. He’s always had a crush on her, but he doesn’t want her to find out because he doesn’t think he would ever have a chance with her.

TP 1 – opportunity: One day, while Giancarlo is sitting in his backyard, he hears a whispering voice; however no one is in sight.

Stage 2 – new situation: Giancarlo frantically runs inside his house to free the creepy voice from his mind. He begins to do his homework to distract himself from his thoughts. He convinces himself that no one could possibly be inside his backyard, so the voice must have been his imagination after a long day of school. A few hours later he decides to go in his backyard to see if he hears the voices again. This time it’s dark outside and he can’t see anything, but he sure does hear the voices again. This time the voices are clearer; they’re calling out his name. He now realizes that these voices are not in his imagination; they’re real. He has a feeling that some of his classmates are pulling a prank on him to scare him and tease him.

TP 2: Giancarlo decides to invite Alessia over to his house the next day so that she can hear the voices as well and together they can get to the bottom of this and find out who it is trying to scare Giancarlo.

Stage 3 – progress: The next day at school, Giancarlo asks Alessia to have lunch with him. While they’re eating, he explains to her the events that occurred the night before. She also believes that some of their classmates might be trying to pull a prank on him. She thinks that since all of the boys in their class adore her, she should have no problem getting them to stop pranking Giancarlo. After school, the two of them head over to Giancarlo’s house. It’s bright outside so they sit on the porch in the backyard to wait for any voices. After a while Giancarlo starts to hear the whispers again, however Alessia does not. This time they’re calling out Alessia’s name and saying that she will be murdered if she stays in Giancarlo’s house. Giancarlo turns pale as he tells Alessia what he just heard. Alessia is frightened, and she doesn’t know what to believe because although she does not hear the voices herself, she knows that Giancarlo is not lying. Alessia says that she feels nauseous and she runs inside Giancarlo’s house. Giancarlo is worried for her safety so he runs inside after her, but when he enters his house, Alessia is nowhere in sight. Her shoes and jacket and still in the entrance so she must still be inside the house however he cannot find her and she is not answering him.

TP 3 – point of no return: Giancarlo believes that the kids who were hiding in his backyard must have somehow gotten to Alessia to harm her; he is now determined to find out exactly where these voices are coming from to save Alessia.

Stage 4 – complications and higher stakes: Giancarlo searches every room in his house to look for Alessia, but she’s nowhere in sight. He’s now more determined than ever to find out who’s doing this. He goes back into his backyard to hear the voices once again. Once he’s outside he starts yelling; asking the voices who they are and what they’ve done with Alessia. They respond by telling him to follow the signs. He’s confused as to what that means, but he enters his house once again to look for signs. As he enters, he sees mud footsteps on the floor. Alessia’s shoes are now gone from the entrance. He figures that Alessia tried escaping from the mysterious people. He follows the footsteps leading up the stairs. The footsteps lead straight to his bedroom. He enters his room and finds a note on his bed from Alessia saying that she is fine, but she had to go do something to put an end to all this and she’d explain everything the next day at school. He’s not sure if the letter is really from Alessia, but he goes to bed hoping for the best so that the next day can soon come.

TP 4 – the major setback: The next day at school, Giancarlo can’t find Alessia anywhere.

Stage 5 – the final push: He starts to panic because he realizes that the note on his bed was a fake. The taunting voices must have kidnapped her. He starts asking students around the school if they’ve seen Alessia lately, but no one seems to know who she is. He explains the story to his class about the voices he’s been hearing and how Alessia tried solving the mystery with him, but now she’s nowhere to be seen. All the students seem to think he’s delusional because they’ve never heard of Alessia. Even the teacher doesn’t know who she is. How can they not know her if she’s been in this class all year? The students start accusing him for having mental problems. They all believe he created a fictional character is his head which he thinks is real. Even the teachers think he needs to see a psychiatrist to get some help.

TP 5 – the climax: Giancarlo is sent to get professional help and he is later diagnosed with manic depression.

Stage 6 – the aftermath: Giancarlo is told that Alessia never really existed. He’s been alone all his life therefore he developed a disorder where he hallucinates people and voices around him around him to make himself feel happier and less alone. He now lives in a psychiatric clinic where he takes medication everyday and has the right treatment to help him overcome this disorder.

- Briefly summarize the events in this case study and list the issues it raises around privacy.

Jared is surprised to be called into the principle’s office Monday morning where he’s told that he’s getting suspended. The reason for this suspension is due to pictures of him drinking at a party over the weekend which were posted on the internet without his consent. The principle decided to suspend all the students that are seen in the photos becase they’re setting a bad example. Jared disagrees with the suspension because the beer isn’t even apparent in the photo and he shouldn’t get punished for something he did outside of school. The principal reminds him that teachers must constantly be setting a good example, therefor so should the students. Jared wants to delete the photo from the internet but he doesn’t know who posted it. He starts to wonder if this photo will affect his chances of getting into college or applying for a job. Jared’s mom who is furious about the situation contacts the photo sharing company but they say that they don’t have any legal reason to remove the photo. Jared calls all the people from the party as a last resort to find out who posted the photo. He learns that his friend Mark posted the photo, so he asks him to remove it. After he removes the photo, Jared notices that the photo can still be found when he searches his name. He worries that this photo will interfere with his future.

- How serious do you think the issues raised here are? Why? Which is the most serious and why?

I think the issues raised here are very serious issues concerning privacy. I think the most serious issues are that Jared had photos posted of him on the internet without his knowledge or consent, and that even though the photos of him were deleted.. they are still accessible through the internet. I think this issue can be very frustrating because Jared had no idea that his photo was posted on the internet in the first place, and now this photo will always be recorded on the internet, no matter how much he wants it to be erased.

- Does this case study seem relevant to your own life? Why or why not?

Yes, this case study does seem relevant to my own life because i constantly find photos of myself posted by other people that I wasn’t aware of. Usually I don’t like these photos and don’t want them to be posted on the internet but there’s not much I can do about it because I don’t have the control to delete these photos. People shouldn’t be allowed to post photos of other people online without their consent because it can make that person feel unconfortable.

-Briefly summarize the events in this case study and list the issues it raises around privacy.

Jillian does most of her shopping online. She starts receiving junk mail, spam messages, telemarketing calls and spam text messages. She notices how much the advertisers seem to know about her interests. Her mother warns her that the magazine companies may be selling her phone number to telemarketers. She worries that the online stores are selling her information to show her advertisements she’d be interested in. She doesn’t know how to resolve this issue because she wants to continue shopping online, but she feels unconfortable having advertisers know all her information.

-How serious do you think the issues raised here are? Why? Which is the most serious and why?

I don’t think that the issues raised here are too important because I don’t see any harm coming out of it. It is an unwilling violation of privacy, although the telemarketers are only using Jillian’s information to sell her products she’d be interested in. I do however agree that Jillian should have a choice in whether or not her information should be sold.

-Does this case study seem relevant to your own life? Why or why not?

I don’t think this case study is relevant to my own life because I rarely give out my personal information over the internet. I only shop in malls, never through the internet.

-Briefly summarize the events in this case study and list the issues it raises around privacy.

Rick notices that there are cameras in his school due to the augmentation of graffiti. He doesn’t feel confortable with the fact that he’s being watched all the time. He decides to do a project on cameras in public places. In his research he learns that many cities are installing cameras in many public places for the police to use. Some people are worried about losing their privacy, but others think it is a good thing to prevent crime and keep us safe. He notices that the only place he can be private is in his home. He then learns that there are also cameras on Google Maps that show clear visuals of your neighborhood and home.

-How serious do you think the issues raised here are? Why? Which is the most serious and why?

I definitely think that the issues shown in the article involving vandalism, theft and violent crimes are serious problems. I think that violence is the most important issue that must be delt with, because many people are using violence as an alternative to stealing and the victims of these violent crimes can get seriously injured, or even die! I don’t however see the use of cameras as a problem. Although we can never be completely private, it’s worth it knowing that the use of cameras can diminish crimes and protect us.

-Does this case study seem relevant to your own life? why or why not?

Yes I think that this case study seems relevant to my own life because I too see cameras everywhere I go. There are cameras in my school, shopping malls, at work, etc. I think these cameras are a great reinforcement to diminish crime, although there are people that I know who feel unconfortable being watched all the time.
